Spotted: Styling Mixed Spots

We’re here again! Styling a rendition of some sort of mixed prints that is. As I have evolved in my personal style, I’ve learned that I really love pairing different types of pieces together. I adore playing with shapes, textures, and colors. I think that it just brings excitement and a unique sense of style to my looks. When considering if I should purchase a new piece, one of the ways that I think about styling it is with a similar or mixed print. It just really opens up the window to your wardrobe that much more and allows you to really play your creativity card. If you’re new, take a look at a few mixed print stylings here and here. Today’s look is all about circular shapes. I talked a little about mixing prints and shape pairing here, so check it out if you’re interested in my thoughts.

One of my rules of thumb that I use when styling my own looks as well as looks for clients, is to focus on pieces that go together instead of match. You’ll always find something that goes, but matching sometimes can be so much more difficult to achieve; and in my opinion, less interesting. Matching can sometimes take away the color dimension, creativity and the mysterious styling aurora of, “How did she think to put that together?” She may not always ask you, but some key indicators that I’ve learned if another woman likes what I have on is, rolling their eyes at me when they have no idea who I am, looking me up and down and then when I realize that they are, giving me this fake half-smirk and looking at me with this piercing stare, then as soon as I look, quickly looking away, flipping their hair hard as hell, adjusting their clothes or sipping their drink to assert their fake confidence. If you’ve experienced this, she liked your outfit and didn’t want to tell you.

But back to pairing pieces that go…as, you can see, these two reds that I have on do not match. However, they’re both warm tones of red and very close in shade. If you’re considering playing with two different pieces with similar shades, ask yourself two questions: Are they both cool or warm tones? Are they in the same color family? If they are, you’ll have a good colorway going in your look. Now, it’s nothing wrong with matching. I like to match sometimes, but most often, I’m just going with the flow, lol. If you find a perfect match to pair with a piece in your outfit, rock it out! The key thing to remember is just don’t exclude the pieces that could look just as good or even better just because they aren’t a perfect match.

The only accessory that I felt I needed in my look was a belt to bring a grounding point to my look. If I didn’t wear a belt, your eye wouldn’t really know where to look first. Because the solid colored belt grounds the look, your eye starts here first and then recognizes the top and skirt as two pieces with slightly different prints. The circular belt buckle also kept in the theme with my spotted theme. For shoes, I kept things pretty simple with my favorite pair of single strap, patent leather sandals. I literally wear these with everything and if you’ve been following me, then I’m sure you’ve noticed, lol. Keep noticing, I’m wearing them out!

This shoot was one of both me and my photographers favorites, so there’s plenty to look at. I hope that you enjoy them as much as we do! Thanks so much for joining me back on the blog today.
