“Omg, I have that dress!” I excitedly said as I watched part of an episode of Celebrity Marriage Boot Camp with my husband. I really don’t remember what season it was because I’m probably one of the very few girls who aren’t into reality tv. It was within the last few months I believe if anybody wants to reference the dress on her. My husband watches all of those shows and sometimes, I tune in just to see what the fashion is looking like, lol. And just for this reason, on this particular episode, Tammy Rivera, whom I actually quite like, had on this exact dress! I’m certain that she didn’t pay what I paid for it, but it was quite nice to see that she owns this dress because she’s one of the few that I sometimes pull style inspiration from. Not all of her outfit combos are something that I would personally wear, but she has a good eye and from what I hear, she styles herself.
A couple of years ago, I used to shop at this resale shop here in Houston called Twice Lucky. If you’ve been around for a while you may remember me talking about them. I had gotten pretty close with the store manager and I used to frequent there to catch up with her and score on the new finds that she had bought for the store. On one of my visits, she had just purchased new pieces that weren’t even out on the floor yet. They were still pilled up in large black trash bags next to the counter. As she fumbled through the bags, she began handing me things to try on. It wasn’t until she pulled out this incredible maxi dress that was 100% silk that I got my whole life, lol. I don’t remember the exact price, but I do know that it was less than $25. Talk about someone else’s trash being MY treasure.
This dress literally steals the show every time I wear it and doesn’t need much addition, but I decided to pair a vintage rope belt with gold plated detail with it to play with one of the less dominant colors in the dress. Because we shot this particular outfit on the beach, I went shoeless for that ultimate beachy vibe. I really love this dress so much and it will probably never ever leave my closet. One of the best $25, sustainable purchases that I’ve ever made. What’s one of your favorite purchases you’ve made from a second-hand shop? Is second-hand shopping something that you enjoy? Style Tip of the day
If you’re styling a piece that is already a grand statement on its own, you can opt to enhance the look slightly like I did with minimal accessories or you can just let the statement piece do the talking. It’s completely up to you, as long as you don’t overdo it. Styling statement pieces really are quite easy because the piece is already doing most of the work for you. You just need to be mindful of overloading your look with too much color if you’re trying to maintain a particular look and feel. If you want to maintain a more chic approach, less is more when styling tons of color. Stick to cleaner lines, more modern cuts, fits, and shapes. It all depends on the feel that you want to portray.
