How often do we step outside of our comfort zones when it comes to our personal style? Do we have to be coaxed, influenced, persuaded or convinced? Or does it come naturally when there’s an interest to try something new? The truth of the matter is, more times than not, most of us are creatures of habit. We tend to stick with what’s safe and what we know because it’s familiar and easy. We don’t want to risk the possibility of looking crazy and we refuse to have our money to be wasted on a style whim. I get it! These are all valuable points, but whoever achieved their ultimate success or their greatest achievement playing under their security blanket or never tweaking their formula just a bit? My argument is, how do you know what could possibly work or work better for you if you don’t experiment? The key is, not just experimenting half hazard, but actually starting with a solid idea of the particular style elements, colors, cuts, drapes and styles that you do like and cross examining them with something new.
Let’s start with the featured look and then we’ll get into how you can easily transition into trying a similar style, based off of what it is that you may like. I started with this windowpane printed top with ruffle detail. I personally love stripes because they’re so versatile, but the slight transition was the style of stripe and pattern in which the stripe is presented. A basic stripe could go vertically or horizontally. This version of a stripe (windowpane) includes both. It’s not something that I’ve worn before but it’s something that features one of the basic elements that I love. Now, I’m sure you’re saying that you’ve seen me wear multiple things that you probably like, but never would have ever considered styling. While this may be very true, the easy transition from a basic stripe to an elevated version is the style concept that can be easily identified with. Make sense?
You start off with a basic style that you do love and transition from there. Let’s do another quick example: If you like wearing polka dots, and you’ve never tried a piece that may feature a polka dot but on a larger scale, this would be an easy transition for you. The piece may feature overlapping circles or it may even be combined with a combination of the two. It’s still the same concept, but a different presentation. The key is to start where you’re comfortable and experiment from there…I decided to complete my look with a similar pair of pants to feature a full – on printed look. I accessorized with a black square belt with gold trimming. It’s really one of my favorites, so you’ll see it featured a lot, and I completed the look with a simple pair of black patent leather single strap heels.
I hope that you’ve enjoyed today’s post and
Style Tip of the day
Comfort is relatively stifling. It cripples us and inhibits us from growing and expanding. Don’t be stifled with your style. Even the smallest steps in the right direction are good ones.
