I really want to wear this floral print top but I also want to wear these windowpane print pants…(Insert meltdown emoji here) Sound Familiar? When your style emotions all over the place, how do you cope? The best answer is: Just deal with those mixed emotions and address them head-on with a killer mixed print look! You’ve seen it before, you may or may not have tried it, but what you may not know is that there is indeed a science to it. Let’s get down to the nitty-gritty of this look and talk about how and why it works

Mixing Prints

Typically, an easy way to always smash a mixed print look is to focus on one color commonality in each piece and vary the size of each print. For instance, if you’re wearing houndstooth and floral print, you want one of the prints to dominate aka your larger print and the next to counter the dominance with a smaller size print. Then, between the two pieces, one color needs to be the same. This is kinda the basics or preliminaries of easily approaching a mixed print look. As you start mixing prints and colors that are seemingly obtuse from one another, that’s when the art and science of mixing prints comes in.

With this mixed print look, I ditched the common rule of color play and utilized my leopard top as my neutral. It also served as my dominate print for my look. By now, we should all know that leopard and cheetah is considered neutral. I have yet to see it paired with another print and not look good. So, with my leopard print as my base, I paired it with bold colors for a definite contrast.

Depending on what and how you want your look to read, the colors that you select to pair with your leopard is really up to you. I wanted my look to be classic and chic, so this tartan just fit the bill. This is really the perfect example of how to wear classic pieces in a creative way. I finished my look off with these amazing gold hoops, that have instantly become my favorites and my blue suede booties that gave that extra punch of color richness.
